Honoring Nurse Jackie’s Extraordinary Service

Integral to the Peace Corps’ mission to foster peace, friendship, and cultural exchange are the dedicated country staff who help make it possible. These teams, composed mostly of host-country nationals with support from U.S. personnel, oversee volunteer operations, prioritize volunteer well-being, and supervise program growth. Their work spans from training and medical care to ensuring initiatives reflect both local needs and organizational objectives. Their ongoing dedication gives volunteers the strong foundation they need to thrive, serve effectively, and build lasting relationships within their communities.

This March, we turn the spotlight to Nurse Jackie, whose distinguished 36 years as a Peace Corps Medical Officer highlight her commitment to compassion, professionalism, and unwavering support. Throughout her service, Nurse Jackie cared for some 1,000 volunteers, including many members of the Full Basket Belize Board, and offered stability to twelve Country Directors. Her leadership fostered the advancement of the Peace Corps’ mission of service and cross-cultural understanding among volunteers and staff. She served as a dependable confidant and source of reassurance for individuals facing challenges, guiding volunteers through adversity with resilience and renewed confidence. Volunteers were always greeted by Nurse Jackie’s warm, welcoming spirit – her infectious smile and joyful laugh made everyone feel instantly at home. She had a remarkable way of putting people at ease, and her sincere encouragement lifted the hearts of all who crossed her path.

As we honor women’s contributions this March, we warmly thank Nurse Jackie for her decades of dedicated service, integrity, and kindness. The lives you’ve touched, your inspiring example, and your profound legacy will be remembered within the Peace Corps community and far beyond. Here’s wishing you happiness and joy in your future endeavors!
