Grant spotlight: Our Lady of Sorrows RC School

Our Lady of Sorrows RC School is a small rural school located in Dolores Village in the Toledo District and currently serving 143 students and faculty.  They applied for and received a 2025 community project grant to enhance safety at their school.

Need: The goal of the school’s grant was to secure the school grounds to provide a safer, healthier, and more conducive environment for learning. The school is located on a public road creating potential danger from passing vehicles.  In the past, vandals had damaged or defaced the school.  Domestic animals such as pigs, chickens, and dogs had free access to the campus, leaving behind their excrement. These issues presented a health and safety concern for the students.

Outcome: Working along with the Dolores Village leaders, the school’s PTA, and community volunteers, the school constructed cement anchors and installed sapodilla posts to support the chain link and barbed wire fencing.  The grant funds provided fencing for the front of the school along the road, the most dangerous area for students. The students, staff, and community feel the area is much safer now.

Congratulations to the community for working together to provide a safer environment for all concerned! Thanks to FBB donors for your generosity in supporting our grant programs!
